Michael Wants
to be a Photographer

Introduction
The photographs in this book were produced for an exhibition hosted a the William Marten Gallery, Rochester, NY April 2001.
From the William Marten Gallery, 2001.
I first saw Michael Peres’ work almost eight years ago. It was one photograph of many at a faculty exhibition. When I told Michael that I thought his image was beautiful, he responded by telling me that he was flattered, but that he did not consider his work ‘art’. He said that he was a bio-medical photographer and that he just wanted to have his work represented along with the other faculty who were, for the most part, considered artists.
Shortly after the William Marten Gallery opened, I jumped at opportunity to ask Michael if he would consider exhibiting his work in a one-person show. The rest is history. A body of work was produced which included the Plant series that is included in this book. Not art? Judge for yourself.
These photographs in their indexical relation to reality, presently a microscopic one, lend themselves to be interpreted as both science and art depending on the context and their relation to the viewer. So, if you are interested in genus and phylum, the idea of expressive color, or you just like “pretty” flowers, Peres’ work delivers on all counts addressing each viewer in a private encounter.
